Linda Hodgdon, M.Ed., CCC-SLP
Linda Hodgdon is a Speech/Language Pathologist who has pioneered the development of visual strategies for supporting students with Autism Spectrum Disorders, behaviour disorders, and other communication difficulties. She is a popular national and international presenter who is well known for her practical approach to dealing with communication and behaviour challenges. Linda is the author of two best sellers, Visual Strategies for Improving Communication and Solving Behaviour Problems in Autism currently two of the most recommended books in the field of autism because they are packed with easy to implement ideas for improving communication. Linda is the Director of Cornerstone Communication Center, an organization that provides consultation, training and professional development with the goal of improving communication.
Clara Claiborne Park
Clara Claiborne Park is the author of The Siege: The First Eight Years of an Autistic Child (1967). Her latest book is Exiting Nirvana: A Daughter’s Life with Autism (2001). Clara is a college professor and the mother of four children, including Jessy Park. Jessy is now a woman of 44 and was diagnosed with autism at age 3. Jessy’s remarkable talents, which include arcane mathematical concepts, Morse code, and incredible architectural paintings, are a paradox to her autism. Clara will tell the story of these remarkable achievements that continued from childhood to adulthood and will convey the lessons her daughter has learned and taught.
Jerry Newport, B.A.
Jerry Newport is an adult with Asperger’s syndrome. Raised in New York, Jerry received a B.A. in Mathematics from the University of Michigan. He has been active in the Autism Society of America and is responsible for founding and running Adult Group United and Autistic (AGUA), a support group for adults diagnosed with Autism/Asperger’s /P.D.D. Jerry’s life story and his work with AGUA was featured on “60 Minutes†in 1996. Jerry has recently co-authored Autism/Asperger’s Syndrome and Sexuality, and is also the author of Your Life is Not a Label.
Jeanette McAfee, M.D.
Dr. McAfee is a physician who has a child of her own with high functioning autism and is internationally recognized for her work developing social-emotional skills training programs for individuals with high functioning autism, Asperger’s syndrome and related disorders. Jeanette is the founder and director of Social Solutions, a private clinic in northern California through which she provides individual and group social-emotional skills training, school assessments and program development, and other consulting services. With her colleague, Amelia Davies, she has co-developed a drama program designed to teach social-emotional skills through the use of theatre arts. Jeanette is the author of the best-selling book, Navigating the Social World: A Curriculum for Individuals With Asperger’s Syndrome, High Functioning Autism, and Related Disorders. This book received outstanding reviews from researchers and clinicians alike including Dr. Tony Attwood who strongly recommended it for it’s common sense approach and practical examples consistent with current theoretical models of autism and Asperger’s Syndrome. Dr. McAfee is a sought after presenter at conferences and workshops around the world.
